They don’t come much better than Kevin Black — just ask anyone who knew the veteran Bossier High School and Parkway assistant football coach. Black is gone far too soon after dying from complications related to COVID-19 on Saturday, just a few months after retiring from Parkway High School. He was 58.

Former Parkway principal Nichole Bourgeois, now the assistant superintendent of curriculum for Bossier Schools, said Black was a beloved teacher, coach and family man.
“That description simply touches the surface of the man he became,” Bourgeois told The Times. “Guided at an early age by his parents, Kevin lived by the teachings of Christ, which was displayed in his daily interactions with students, peers, and community members. He was concerned with issues of just and equitable practices, an ethic of care, and fighting for those who could not fight for themselves. His work was his play, and his play was his work, thus Kevin was called to the educational profession committed to the intellectual and social growth of his students and athletes.”

In the case of Black, several of his former athletes and fellow coaches have come forward to express their appreciation for his impact on their lives.
“Coach Black was a very outgoing man with a good heart who always looked out for people,” said former LSU wide receiver Terrace Marshall, who played at Parkway. “He was a family man who had real love for his Pops. Heaven gained another good one. He is going to be missed.”
Added former Parkway quarterback Amani Larry: “He was more than a coach. He was our mentor, and a second father to everyone on the team. I would go to battle behind him any day. We always looked forward to him saying during pregame on Friday nights, ‘Face the winning side.’ ”
A former Parkway offensive lineman, Black graduated with Parkway coaches Eddie Pentecost and David George in 1980. He retired in May after more than 20 years of coaching.
“Kevin hadn’t changed a lot since high school,” George said. “He loved coaching kids and kids loved being coached by him. He was a special guy — always made me laugh when he told old coaching stories. He was one of a kind.”
Pentecost said Black loved his athletes like they were his own children.
“He was the one who kept everything fun with his stories and big laugh,” Pentecost said. “Everyone loved Kevin.”

“Coach Black held each player he coached to a high level of accountability and would get on their butts one minute and hug them and tell them he loved them the next,” Rayner said. “It sounds crazy, but that’s what made each of them want to run through a wall for him. The love he had for his own children was immense. He was most proud of them and their accomplishments. He was a great friend to each coach in the office. His concern was never about himself but always about his peers. He had the most amazing stories and no matter how many times you heard them they never became old — just better. I’ll truly miss him.”
Parkway track coach Kent Falting said Black was an old-school coach who believed in working hard to get better – and he had a story to fit every situation.
“If a kid rushed for 200 yards, he would tell you about another kid who did it first in the '90s back at Bossier. If a kid ran well in the 100-meters, he’d remind you of the time Hunter Pipes raced Jim Gatlin in the 100 after football practice,” Falting said. “He could make you laugh at any situation. He was a great coach, but an even better friend and father. He called everyone ‘brother’ and you started to believe he really was your brother.”
Bourgeois said Black will always be remembered as a champion of South Bossier’s students and community.
“Coach Black was committed to taking students from where they were and developing each into young, responsible and caring men and women,” she said. “The ultimate win for Coach Black was his students’ success as moral human beings and their contribution to society.”
Former Northwood and Parkway coach Jim Gatlin was the best man at Black’s wedding and coached with him at Bossier and Parkway.
“Kevin just shot you straight. He told folks what they needed to hear, which may not have been what they wanted to hear,” Gatlin said. “You’re lucky if you have two or three people in your life that you can totally lean on. I just lost one of mine.”
